The caste name is divided into two distinct components.

  • Rami

The word is derived from lord Rama. He is a widely revered avatar of Vishnu. They are from Ramaa. Ramaa is an alternate name of Lakshmi. The Goddess brings prosperity, wealth, and fortune.

  • Setty

It comes from a Sanskrit word, Shresthi. The word means “merchant guild leader” or “eminent person”. Anciently, the title was used for specific individuals. These individuals headed mercantile operations, local trading, and financial systems. 

Geographical Distribution: Where are they located?

The main hub of the community is in Telugu-speaking areas. However, a huge part of the community migrates later. This leads to their expansion in various areas of the country.
